"The Athens of North Texas"
from the Yucca, the Yearbook of North Texas Normal College, 1917
In the 19th century, Denton citizens realized the importance of education and worked to introduce a public school system to our growing community. In the 1890s civic groups lobbied hard to bring state colleges to Denton as a means of ensuring greater quality of life and economic security to the community. Today Denton has over 22,000 students in the public school system and more than 45,000 students are enrolled in our colleges and universities.
